One Week Cape Town Sampler
Spend 4 days in Cape Town to see the highlights (e.g. Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain, Beach, Big Red Bus). Then spend 2-3 nights in Franschhoek for wedding fun and wine country relaxation.
African Safari with Cape Town Sampler
Add one of the following onto above itinerary:
Day trip to a game reserve outside of Cape Town (2 hour drive from town). Several options including Aquila and Inverdoorn with decent game drives. Not our first choice for an authentic safari experience, but if you only have one day to see big 5 near Cape Town, this is the best option. Kid friendly.
Spend 2-4 nights in an Eastern Cape game reserve. This is one of the best value for money options and is just a 45 minute flight from Cape Town. The area is malaria free and the game reserves are also a good option for families with kids. Check out Pumba Lodge and Sibuya (we sent several friends to Sibuya and they really enjoyed it)
Victoria Falls and Botswana Safari (~1 week). If you have enough time and money, this would be our first choice safari option to see amazing wildlife and breathtaking waterfalls. Aside from flights, it is easiest/cheapest to book this with a travel agent. We recommend Elephant Valley Lodge in Chobe, Botswana for 3 nights and 2-3 nights at Ilala Lodge in Victoria Falls.
Other recommended safari destinations we know less about include:
Kruger National Park—South Africa’s premier National Park, but it can be expensive and difficult to get to from Cape Town (might as well go to Botswana)
Namibia—known for Kalahari desert and big cats
Other Nearby Sights in South Africa
Garden Route and/or Route 62. This is a popular destination for South Africans. Drive from Cape Town along the N2 Highway towards Port Elizabeth. There are many lovely seaside towns (e.g. Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, George). Drive back through the Karoo (classic South African high desert) along route 62. Historical towns such as Oudtshoorn lead on to the lush wineland valleys of Robertson. If you are interested, you can ride an ostrich. For a laugh, check out Chris’s ostrich ride as well as Mario’s and Keith’s.
Back-packing through East and Southern Africa
If you have a couple extra months, you could also retrace Julia and Chris’s steps through East and Southern Africa. Places visited included Madagascar, Tanzania (Zanzibar and Serengeti), Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique. To read more about the journey check out our travel blog.
